Dive Sites
Depending on your departure point (Hurghada, Safaga, El Quseir, Marsa Alam, Hamata) you can reach different dive sites in the Red Sea. Usually, daily diving takes you on the closest diving locations, situated around and about the base area. It is possible to have daily dive trips to further locations, but these are made only on request and with a minimum number of guests on board the boat.
Hurghada
As the biggest establishment for diving on this side of the Red Sea, Hurghada offers a multitude of possibilities for diving at all levels of experience. Below you can find our choice for the top three sites you mustn’t miss when diving in Hurghada:
Umm Gamar (the Mother of the Moon) Island
It is the northernmost dive site in Hurghada, and one of the most popular among experienced divers, offering a dense population of reef and pelagic species. The east and west side of the island offer awesome drift dives.
Gota Abu Ramada
It is the location of “the Aquarium”, among other coral gardens which probably provide the most colorful and beautiful reefs of Hurghada. At about 20 m from the wall there are two coral pinnacles abounding with glassfish. It is “THE PLACE” to be for photographers.
El Mina Wreck
Named after its location, the harbor (in Arabic: el mina), the wreck lies near the sea gull marina since 1969 at about 30 m underwater. The 60 m long ship makes an interesting dive site, if not for other, at least for being one of the few minesweeper wrecks in the world.
Diving El Mina has a bonus attached to it. If your air consumption is good, or you are not on your first dive here and can think of yourself at exploring it more succinctly, then you can take a look at the fishing boat – or “Hasaballah” as the locals call it - which is situated at a short distance from the main wreck. The two combined will definitely make it up on your “favorites dive sites list” in Hurghada.
Safaga
Situated south of Hurghada you can reach it by car in less than an hour. Being the main harbor for ferry departures towards south, it is still unspoiled and one of the few places where you can experience the “authentic Egypt”.
Diving-wise, Safaga hosts some of the most renowned locations in Egypt. The infamous Salem Express which is known as being the biggest maritime disaster in the country is to be found here, together with other wrecks worth exploring. Panorama, with the famous gorgonians and anemone “community”, Abu Kafan, one of the best dive sites here and many others are just a taste of what you can experience in this little port town.
El Queseir
One and a half hour south of Safaga you can find this small seaport, very similar to its “bigger” brother situated to the north. Here you can enjoy a quiet time while diving in the warm waters of the Red Sea.
Marsa Alam
Located four hours south from Hurghada, Marsa Alam is a settlement undergoing major changes. Being a fishermen village, like Hurghada was ten-twenty years ago, and served by an international airport, Marsa is becoming the main attraction for divers, due to its easy access to the south diving locations of the Red Sea.
Names like Elphinstone are well-known, so this and the unspoiled, well-preserved corals are a sure attraction. Not to speak about the higher probabilities found here of seeing different species of sharks underwater.
Hamata
Surrounded by the desert to the west, but fortunately situated on the shores of the Red Sea, this little village situated four hours south of Marsa Alam, invites you to daily diving with access to some of the nicest diving location in the “deep south” of Egypt.
For a taste of “real Egypt” and the opportunity to visit the Wadi El Gemel National Park, come to this remote place.
